Metal packaging and stamping technology

In daily life, we can often see can-shaped packaging boxes made of some metal. The metal cans are mainly classified according to the manufacturing method into three-piece cans and two-piece cans. The two-piece can came out in the middle of the 20th century. The whole packaging can consists of two parts, namely the can body and the can lid, so it is called a two-piece can.

Compared with other packaging methods, canning has many advantages. First, canning can effectively prevent food or beverages from being contaminated and extend their shelf life, thereby ensuring the freshness and quality of food. Second, canning is easy to store and carry, and more convenient for consumers to use. Metal cans are stamped from metal sheets (usually tinplate, chrome-plated sheet, cold-rolled thin steel sheet, aluminum sheet, etc.) and are used as containers for storing food or items. Its appearance is a milestone in food storage and transportation.

The traditional method of making metal packaging cans is:

first cut the iron sheet flat blank into rectangular blocks, then roll the blank into a cylinder (i.e., cylinder body), and then solder the formed longitudinal joint line to form a side seal. One end of the cylinder (i.e., the can bottom) and the circular end cover are mechanically formed into a flange and rolled and sealed (i.e., a double crimping seam) to form the can body; the other end is sealed with a can lid after the product is loaded. Since the container is composed of three parts: the can bottom, the can body, and the can lid, it is called a three-piece can. This canning method has basically not changed much in the past 150 years, except that the degree of automation and processing accuracy have been greatly improved. In recent years, the weld of the side seal has been changed to fusion welding.
